Official Rules
Official rules for the Hack the Map hackathon.
Event Dates
January 10 – 18, 2022.
Hacking period
Team hacking begins Monday, January 10 at 9:00 AM PST (17:00 GMT) for all teams.
Team hacking ends Tuesday, January 18 at 9:00 AM PST (17:00 GMT) for all teams. All projects must be complete and submitted by this time. No submissions or project updates are permitted after this time.
Submission period
Projects may be submitted to devpost.com at any time after the hacking period begins and up to the project submission deadline on Tuesday, January 18 at 9:00 AM PST (17:00 GMT). No submissions or project updates are permitted after this time.
Judging period
Judging begins on Tuesday, January 18 at 10:00 AM PST (18:00 GMT). Only projects that meet all eligibility requirements will be considered for judging.
Eligibility
Open to employees of Esri and Esri Int'l Distributors.
Esri employees are required to have their manager’s approval.
Participants must be able to appear in-person at Esri headquarters or via Zoom.
Participants can form teams of up to 6 individuals.
Projects must use ArcGIS Platform services and APIs in some way.
Each project submission must include a video that is no longer than 5 minutes that presents the project theme, intended audience, use case, solution, technology used and any other interesting and unique attributes about the project.
Teams declare participation by submitting a completed project that meets all eligibility and submission requirements by the submission deadline.
Submission Requirements
Submissions will be judged on content developed during the hackathon submission period only. Any component developed before the hackathon submission period is not eligible for judging.
All teams must declare their participation by the submission deadline. No submissions or project updates are accepted after the submission deadline.
All project submissions are due by the submission deadline on DevPost and must complete all required project fields: title, elevator pitch (short description), technology used, link to public GitHub repository, all contributing team members, project description, and screenshots.
Project submissions must submit a 5-minute video presentation of their solution. The video must be submitted with the project by the submission deadline, and it must be accessible to the judges (no private YouTube videos, please).
All code must be submitted to a public GitHub repository and available for the judges and event organizers to access.
The submitted solution must build and run in a standalone app on a PC or Mac computer, in a simulator running on a PC or Mac computer, or it must run in a standard web browser.
If any additional hardware is used, it must be defined and demonstrated in the project description and in the presentation video. If additional hardware is required, it is the team's responsibility to make it available to the judges during the judging period, if the judges require it.
All projects submitted must use the ArcGIS Platform services and ArcGIS APIs in some way. Projects submitted that do not use ArcGIS Platform developer technology are not eligible for judging and prizes. Using any other services and APIs is acceptable, as long as the project includes ArcGIS Platform services.
All submissions must use only publicly released APIs, SDKs, software, and services. Beta software is accepted only if it is generally available to the public. Since the submissions are made to public GitHub repositories, and our goal is to show your project off on a public-facing website, we cannot accept submissions that use proprietary or internally available non-public components.
Submission Rights & Display
Esri maintains full rights to the resulting project and maintains the right to continue further development of the idea.
Esri will have the right to include the project and all project materials on its website, blog post, social media posts, and other forms of publication and communication.
Prizes & Winner Selection
There will be three first prize winners, one in each of the three categories, as determined by the judges, and three second prize winners, one in each of the three categories.
The judges will be instructed to grade the projects on a scoring of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) in the following categories:
● Presentation: We will judge the quality of the presentation, which includes how well the product is represented, how engaging the presentation is, how well the team makes the case for the project, and how well the presentation follows the presentation guidelines.
● Applicability: We will be judging how well the project applies to its designated category: Civic engagement, Consumer, or Sustainability.
● Usefulness: We will be judging the app's real-world applicability and usefulness.
● ArcGIS Platform Integration: We will be verifying whether the application uses ArcGIS Platform technology and utilizes ArcGIS services with open source and ArcGIS APIs.
● Design: We will be judging the effectiveness of the app's design for user experience, cartography, and data visualization.
● Project Quality: We will be judging whether the app has a clear architecture and code organization. We will also be judging the extent to which app is complete and functional.
The score is determined by averaging all the scores across all the judging criteria categories for each contest judge.
The winner is the team with the highest score in each of their respective selected categories. The second place team is the team with the second highest score in each category.
In the case of a tie, the prize will be awarded to the team that presented first.
In the case where not enough projects are completed in each category, then no prize will be awarded in that category.
Winning teams will also have bragging rights to being the best team in Esri at delivering an app in their respective category! :)
Code of conduct
All participants are required to abide by Esri's code of conduct.
